Downtown in December

December 1, 2008 by Jessica Gonzalez

Downtown in DecemberYes, Virginia.  There is a Downtown in December!

Where can you find the largest man-made snow tubing venue in North America?  Believe it or not, right here in downtown Oklahoma City.  And, that’s just one of the many holiday festivities in a 10-block polar playground during the 2008 Downtown in December – our seventh and best year yet!

Hello, I’m Jessica Gonzalez.  As Director of Events for Downtown Oklahoma City, Inc, the most rewarding benefit of my job is planning and coordinating events so that Downtown OKC is an exciting and vibrant place, especially in December.

Jessica GonzalezYou might think that my former career as an accountant wouldn’t prepare me for coordinating large events.  But, as an accountant for Downtown OKC, I had the benefit of knowing how to set and work within the budget.  The financial picture actually created a sort of blueprint of the event…who to hire, where to purchase items…virtually every piece of the giant, event puzzle.  And, although I’ve always enjoyed accounting, I’m also a real people person who loves making something happen.  So, when Downtown OKC’s Director of Events position became available, I leaped at the opportunity!

Without a doubt, our largest event is going on right now!  Downtown in December gets bigger and better every year.  The festivities began on November 28 with the mayor lighting the beautifully adorned Christmas tree in Bricktown followed by a spectacular river parade on the Oklahoma River.   In addition to the beautiful decorations and lights, there will be free canal boat rides Thursday – Sunday evenings all month long.  Sunday afternoons, enjoy free admission to the Oklahoma City Memorial Museum, and the Gaylord-Pickens Oklahoma Heritage Museum where children of all ages will enjoy interactive, hands-on exhibits. On Sunday evenings enjoy free tours of the Crystal Bridge, too.

Canal RideOur snow tubing venue is still the largest in North America and the Devon Ice Rink offers over 9000 sq. ft. of solid ice with something new this year…colored lights all around the rink!  For 2008, the trees in Bi-Centennial Park will be wrapped in more lights than any other year for an absolutely magical experience.

"Sonic Segway Santa" is back this year by popular demand.  The jolly old elf will be scooting his way through downtown giving away special holiday light viewing glasses to enhance the thousands of Christmas light displays.

Snow TubingDowntown in December is an excellent time to plan a party or family outing, and Downtown OKC is the perfect place.  With so much to do, why not consider an overnight or weekend stay?  There are six hotels and 1600 rooms to accommodate any size group, and some even give a group rate or weekend discount.  The decorations and activities add a festive mood. Plus, all the restaurants, shops, entertainment and holiday activities will ensure that everyone has a memorable time.  Visit our website at www.downtownindecember.com or call 1-888OKC4FUN for all the details of this outstanding holiday event that lasts all month long.

We look forward to making your holiday season the best yet.  From all of us in downtown OKC to you and your family, a very, very Merry Christmas and the happiest of New Years!
